What's Been "H"appening 05/28/01

Niehaus Cycle Sales in Litchfield, Illinois holds an "Appreciation Days" weekend every year in May.  This year the 15th annual occurence of this event was held May 18 - 20.  Major events held over the weekend consisted of a poker run, demo rides, custom bike show, light parade and a motorcycle/trailer raffle.  These events were surrounded by music, food and vendor sales.

All of this sounded like too much to resist,  so eleven members of Chapter H decided to journey the 250 miles South to participate in the fun and help boost the local economy.  Six of the eleven (Lloyd & Leona, Hugh & Sue and Mike & Sue),  went down there on Friday.  The remaining five (Les & Bev, Bruce, Joel & Larry Greco) left early Saturday morning.  Knowing that they would probably get in trouble with their credit cards, "Iron Fannies" Bruce, Joel and Larry spent their money and rode back the same day!

The weather forecast looked liked Southern Illinois was going to be subjected to "monsoon-like" conditions for most of the weekend. However,  true to the weather forecaster's usual accuracy the weekend turned out to be mostly sunny, warm and breezy.

One of the highlights of the weekend was "Lucky Leona" Tatman winning a hot air balloon ride!  The next time you see Leona, ask her about the weather conditions during the flight and the landing!

Needing time to allow the charge cards to cool down, some members took a side trip into the town of Carlinville.  Carlinville is a picturesque small town, with a town square that looks like the movie set from "Back To The Future".  After a morning of walking around Carlinville in an effort to help their local economy, we needed some refreshment.  We found a small shop run by Australian missionaries that specialized in Australian cakes and pastries.  One of the specialties that we tried was their homemade "Butterfinger Ice Cream".  This ice cream was so good, it took care of our ice cream craving for over 24 hours (unheard of for a group of Goldwingers).  One of our members who shall remain nameless, found a shop that offered 50% off on Beanie Babies and promptly filled the trunk of their Goldwing with them (by the way Leona, did you get them all unpacked?).

The weekend was a great kickoff to the 2001 Chapter H riding season - we hope to see you there next year!

Ride Safe!
